SOUTH AFRICA

Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS)

The Mastercard Scholarship is available to African students wishing to study at the University of Pretoria. In order to qualify, you must have admission to the university. The applications are done online, but hard copies can also be accepted. APPLY HERE.

University of Pretoria LLM/MPhil Human Rights and Democratization is a one-year program taught in South Africa and a partner institution. It is open to African students who wish to learn about human rights and join the HRDA Alumni Association whose members work on human rights and democracy. South African- German Centre for Development Research provides scholarships for students from Sub-Saharan Africa who are pursuing a master’s in public administration, MA in Development Studies as well as Ph.D. studies and fellowships. The studies are to be undertaken at the University of Western Cape in South Africa or Ruhr University in Germany. They cover most costs incurred. For more information, visit their website here

GDAI – Ph.D. The scholarship is available for one African candidate who is undertaking a Ph.D. in the field of state capacities, governance, and bureaucracy for development. This scholarship is part of the Governance for Development in Africa Initiative of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.  Visit their website here.

Leventis Fellowship for Nigerian Scholars is a program available at the University College London at the Centre for African Studies that enables young Nigerian scholars the opportunity to spend 3 months as visitors to the center and participate in the intellectual life at the center. The Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships are available to African students wishing to pursue a master's degree in a low or middle-income country. More information is available here

The African Palliative Care society provides funding for people wishing to attend events related to palliative care (check their calendar). The funding is for individuals living in low and middle-income countries who have a poster presentation that has been accepted at the event. For more information, visit their website here

The Beit Trust provides master’s degree support for eligible students from Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi to study in the UK or South Africa. For more information on eligibility and funding visit their website here

KENYA 

DAAD In country/In region Scholarship Programs for East Africa is a German collaboration with Kenyan institutes of higher education offering several opportunities for funding to study in Kenya. These programs require an acceptance from a Kenyan university followed by an application to DAAD for financing. Check the DAAD site to find which universities are included in this project.

Inter-University Council for East Africa provides educational opportunities and scholarships for nationals of East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Rwanda and Burundi). The council attempts to bridge higher education amongst the partner nations of the river basin.

SEED Kenya provides post-secondary scholarships to high-achieving students across Kenya. The funding is provided in the form of a grant (50%) and a loan (50%) that must be repaid in 3 years after receiving employment. This program will be phased out in 2023.

DAAD In Country/In Region Scholarships for Southern Africa provides a full scholarship for graduate studies to students from the southern Africa region.

NIGERIA 

Nigeria Higher Education Foundation was begun in 2004 as a way to encourage philanthropy and elicit support for higher education in Nigeria.
